AI in Smart Cities

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 seeks to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. To this end, artificial intelligence (AI) offers cities many opportunities. However, there is still reluctance to implement and use this technology. In this research, led by Amal Ben Rjab, we explore the barriers to AI adoption in smart cities. We find that important technological, environmental and organizational barriers exist. Being able to identify these barriers is a necessary first step to being able to overcome them and implement AI solutions in a responsible way to address sustainability goals.

Our article, titled “Barriers to Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Smart Cities: A Systematic Literature Review and Research Agenda” has been published in Government Information Quarterly and is now available online.
